Snow peaks above a leafy city, alpine lakes, canyons, and cable cars - Kazakhstan is visa-free for Indians and absurdly good value.

Almaty has quietly become the smartest short international break available to Indian travellers. Kazakhstan allows Indians 14 days of visa-free entry, direct flights from Delhi take barely 3 hours, and the city itself is extraordinary: a green, European-feeling grid of tree-lined boulevards set directly beneath the snow-capped Trans-Ili Alatau mountains. Fifteen minutes separate downtown coffee shops from 3,200-metre ski slopes. Our Almaty tour package from Ahmedabad packs the best of it into a long weekend plus a day.
Start in the city: the candy-coloured, all-wood Zenkov Cathedral in Panfilov Park (built in 1907 without a single nail, by legend), the sobering war memorial beside it, and the Green Bazaar, where dried fruit, horse cheese, Uzbek bread, and mountains of Almaty's famous apples make for the best photo-and-snack hour in Central Asia. Ride the cable car up Kok Tobe hill for sunset views over the city with the mountain wall behind it.
The mountains are the main event. Medeu, at 1,691 metres, is the world's highest-altitude Olympic-sized ice rink - skating here in winter is a bucket-list experience in itself. From Medeu, the gondola continues to Shymbulak, Central Asia's premier ski resort (up to 3,200 m), where winter visitors ski at a fraction of European prices and summer visitors ride the lifts for glacier views and easy high-altitude walks.
Big Almaty Lake, 28 km from the city at 2,511 metres, is the region's postcard: a turquoise glacial bowl ringed by 4,000-metre peaks, at its bluest from June to September. Further out, the Charyn Canyon day trip (about 3 hours' drive) reveals the "Grand Canyon of Central Asia" - the Valley of Castles' red rock towers are unlike anything else within visa-free reach of India. Travellers with an extra day add the Kolsai and Kaindy lakes, where a submerged spruce forest rises from milky-blue water.
Practicalities are easy. The currency is the Kazakh Tenge (KZT); cards are accepted almost everywhere and our Satellite forex desk loads multi-currency cards with USD. Almaty has multiple Indian restaurants, and meals out cost less than in most Indian metro cities. The Ahmedabad-Delhi-Almaty routing takes 7-9 hours total, with return fares from ₹22,000 when booked early - which is why groups of friends from Ahmedabad now pick Almaty over Dubai for milestone birthdays and quick winter escapes.

On the ground, yes - hotel and restaurant prices in Almaty undercut both. Package prices land between them (from ₹45,000 for 4N/5D) because of the Delhi connection, but you get mountains, lakes, and a European feel that neither offers.
Almaty is a safe, orderly city with a strong cafe culture. Multiple Indian restaurants serve vegetarian thalis and Punjabi menus, and supermarkets are well stocked. We book hotels within walking distance of Indian dining for our Gujarati groups.
