The rooftop of the world - Pashupatinath temples, Boudhanath stupas, Phewa Lake reflections of Annapurna, and the thrill of paragliding over a Himalayan valley.
Nepal - home to eight of the world's ten tallest peaks, including Mount Everest at 8,848.86 metres - is simultaneously a place of towering natural grandeur and deep human spirituality. The Kathmandu Valley alone contains seven UNESCO World Heritage Zones, making it one of the densest concentrations of heritage monuments per square kilometre anywhere on earth. And for travellers from Ahmedabad, Nepal is one of the most accessible international destinations - a direct 2.5-hour IndiGo flight to Kathmandu, no visa required with an Indian passport, and a cultural familiarity that makes first-time international travellers feel at ease. Our Nepal tour package from Ahmedabad combines the sacred monuments of Kathmandu with the Himalayan lakeside magic of Pokhara.
Pashupatinath Temple is the holiest Hindu temple in Nepal and one of the most significant Shiva temples in the world. Set on the banks of the Bagmati River - a sacred tributary of the Ganga - the 5th-century temple complex is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The main golden-roofed sanctum is open only to Hindus, but the adjacent ghats along the Bagmati River, where Hindu cremations take place continuously, are open to all visitors. Witnessing the ghats at Pashupatinath - sadhus (holy men) in saffron robes, the smoke of cremation pyres, the flow of sacred water - is one of the most profoundly humbling experiences available to any traveller. The surrounding complex has hundreds of subsidiary temples, carved stone statues, and deer park.
Boudhanath Stupa is one of the largest Buddhist stupas in the world - a 36-metre white dome with the all-seeing eyes of Buddha painted on its upper tower, encircled by 50+ Tibetan Buddhist monasteries. At dusk, hundreds of Tibetan Buddhist monks and nuns circumambulate the stupa clockwise, spinning prayer wheels, chanting, and lighting butter lamps in a ceremony that has continued for 1,400 years. The atmosphere at Boudhanath in the evening is among the most peaceful and spiritually charged environments in all of Asia.
Swayambhunath (Monkey Temple) is a 2,000-year-old hilltop stupa 3 km west of Kathmandu. The 365 steep stone steps to the top are guarded by resident macaque monkeys (sacred to Hindus as descendants of Hanuman) and flanked by prayer wheels and religious carvings. At the summit, the whitewashed stupa has the omniscient Eyes of Buddha on its four sides - the most iconic image of Nepal. The panoramic view of the Kathmandu Valley from here, with the Himalayas visible on clear mornings, is exceptional.
Patan Durbar Square (in Lalitpur, 5 km from central Kathmandu) is the most architecturally refined of the Kathmandu Valley's royal squares. The 17th-century Malla palace complex contains the Krishna Mandir (the only all-stone temple in Nepal, with 21 pinnacles visible from the valley), the Hiranya Varna Mahavihara Golden Temple (1,100 years of continuous Buddhist worship), and the extraordinary stone-carved windows and metalwork of the old royal palace. The artisan shops of Patan are Nepal's best for traditional thangka paintings, metalwork, and carved wooden items.
Pokhara - Nepal's second city and adventure capital - is a completely different experience to Kathmandu. Set on the shore of Phewa Lake at 800 metres altitude, Pokhara offers direct views of the Annapurna Himalayan range - on clear mornings, the jagged white wall of peaks fills the entire northern horizon, with the distinctive fish-tail summit of Machhapuchhre (6,993m) dominating the view. The lake's reflections of these peaks at dawn are breathtaking. Sarangkot (10 km from Pokhara town) is the premier sunrise viewpoint - the spectacle of alpenglow on Annapurna South, Hiunchuli, and Machhapuchhre at first light is one of Nepal's defining images. Sarangkot is also the launch pad for tandem paragliding - a 20–40 minute flight over Phewa Lake with the Annapurna range as a backdrop, widely considered one of the world's great paragliding experiences.
