The birthplace of Lord Ram - the holy city reborn with the grand Ram Mandir, ancient ghats on the Saryu, and centuries of Ramayana heritage awaiting Gujarati pilgrims.
Ayodhya - the birthplace of Lord Ram and one of Hinduism's seven sacred cities (Sapta Puri) - has witnessed a profound renaissance with the consecration of the grand Ram Mandir on January 22, 2024. Today, the city on the banks of the sacred Saryu River draws millions of pilgrims from across India, and Gujarati devotees are among the most eager visitors. Our Ayodhya tour package from Ahmedabad is a carefully crafted pilgrimage itinerary that covers every significant site in this ancient and newly reborn city.
The Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Mandir - the new Ram Mandir - stands at the precise birthplace of Lord Ram as identified by centuries of religious tradition and confirmed by the Supreme Court of India in 2019. The temple is built in Nagara style architecture using pale pink Rajasthani sandstone (Bansi Paharpur stone) sourced from Rajasthan, featuring 160 pillars and three floors rising to 161 feet. The main sanctum sanctorum (garbhagriha) houses the idol of Ram Lalla - the child Ram - seated in a divine posture. The 70-acre temple complex includes mandaps, gardens, and facilities for hundreds of thousands of devotees. Entry is free; timed darshan slots are recommended to manage crowds.
Hanuman Garhi, a 10-minute walk from the Ram Mandir, is the second most visited temple in Ayodhya. A 52-step staircase leads up to the hilltop temple dedicated to Hanuman Ji - believed to be the eternal guardian of Ayodhya. The views over the city from the top are sweeping, and the temple is always humming with devotees. Early morning visits (before 7 AM) are the most peaceful and spiritually powerful.
Kanak Bhawan is one of Ayodhya's most beloved temples - believed to be the golden palace gifted to Sita Mata by Kaikeyi after the wedding of Ram and Sita. The presiding deity is an exceptionally beautiful idol of Ram and Sita adorned with golden crowns and jewelled ornaments. The temple's devotional atmosphere is extraordinarily warm, and the evening aarti here is deeply moving. This is where Ayodhya's spiritual tenderness is felt most strongly.
Ram Ki Paidi is the sacred ghat complex on the Saryu River - 14 interconnected ghats where millions of pilgrims bathe in the holy waters. The Saryu River Aarti, held every evening at sunset, is Ayodhya's most transcendent public ritual. Similar to the Ganga Aarti at Varanasi, priests perform the ceremony with large brass diyas, conch shells, and incense - the Saryu reflecting the fire and the sound of bhajans filling the air. Attending the Saryu Aarti is the single most moving experience any visitor to Ayodhya can have.
Guptar Ghat, 14 km from the city centre, is one of Ayodhya's most sacred ghats - the spot where Lord Ram is said to have taken Jal Samadhi (entered the water) at the conclusion of his earthly life. The ghat is quieter and more contemplative than Ram Ki Paidi, favoured by pilgrims for early morning bathing and meditation. The temples around Guptar Ghat include Chakrahari Vishnu temple and several ancient shrines.
Other significant sites include Nageshwarnath Mandir (one of Ayodhya's 12 Jyotirlingas, associated with the Ramayana); Mani Parvat (the hillock where Ram meditated before coronation, with views over the city); Tulsi Smarak Bhawan (memorial to Goswami Tulsidas, composer of the Ramcharitmanas, with original manuscripts); and the Ram Katha Museum. Ayodhya is also exceptional during Diwali - the festival is celebrated with over 2 million diyas lit on the Saryu ghats, creating a spectacle that has been confirmed as the world's largest Diwali celebration.
