Vietnam from Ahmedabad - An S-Shaped Country of Endless Wonders

Vietnam stretches 1,650 km from the Chinese border in the north to the Mekong Delta in the south - an S-shaped sliver of Southeast Asia that packs extraordinary geographical and cultural variety into every degree of latitude. Ancient Buddhist temples in the north give way to royal citadels in the centre, which give way to French colonial villas and Chinese merchant houses, and finally to the frantic energy of Ho Chi Minh City in the south. Two UNESCO World Heritage Sites - Ha Long Bay and Hoi An Ancient Town - bookend a journey that few travellers ever forget. Our Vietnam tour package from Ahmedabad covers the country's greatest highlights in a well-paced seven-day north-to-south itinerary.

Hanoi, Vietnam's 1,000-year-old capital, is a city of French colonial boulevards, ancient Chinese-style temples, papaya-tree-lined lakes, and one of Asia's greatest street food cultures. The Old Quarter (Hoan Kiem District) - 36 streets each historically specialising in a single trade (Paper Street, Silk Street, Tin Street) - remains remarkably intact. Hoan Kiem Lake (Sword Lake) at the centre of the city, with the Ngoc Son Temple connected to its shore by the iconic red Huc Bridge, is Hanoi's heart. The Temple of Literature (Van Mieu), founded in 1070 and Vietnam's first university, is the best-preserved historical monument in the capital - its courtyards, pavilions, and stele of doctoral laureates are extraordinary in the early morning quiet. The Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum (Ho's embalmed body is displayed inside) and the adjacent Presidential Palace and Stilt House provide a fascinating window into Vietnam's modern history.

Ha Long Bay - a UNESCO World Heritage Site (twice designated, in 1994 and 2000) - is one of the world's truly great natural spectacles. The bay covers 1,553 sq km and contains 1,969 limestone karst islands and islets rising from emerald-green water, many of them pierced by enormous sea caves and grottos. The only way to truly experience Ha Long Bay is by staying overnight on a junk boat cruise - traditional wooden vessels that sail through the karst forests at dusk, anchor in sheltered coves at night, and allow early morning kayaking through sea caves before the day-trippers arrive. Sung Sot Cave (Surprise Cave) - a vast three-chamber grotto hung with stalactites - and Titop Island (where Ho Chi Minh once holidayed) for swimming and a hilltop view of the bay are highlights of any cruise. The experience of watching the sun rise over 1,000 limestone peaks from the deck of a junk is among Asia's most extraordinary travel moments.

Hoi An Ancient Town is Vietnam's most enchanting destination - a 15th–19th century UNESCO-listed trading port on the Thu Bon River in central Vietnam that has survived largely intact through centuries of war and development. The 840+ historical structures include the famous Japanese Covered Bridge (400 years old, the symbol of Hoi An), Chinese Assembly Halls built by merchant communities from Fujian, Guangdong, and Chaozhou, and the old merchant houses with their double-layered roofs and inner courtyards open to visitors. At night, the town is lit by hundreds of silk lanterns in red, gold, and yellow - the light reflecting in the Thu Bon River creates an atmosphere of magical unreality. The Full Moon Lantern Festival (every 14th lunar night) when electricity is turned off and the town is lit entirely by lanterns is one of Southeast Asia's most beautiful events.

Da Nang, 30 km from Hoi An, is central Vietnam's major city and home to the world-famous Golden Bridge (Cau Vang) at Ba Na Hills. This 150-metre pedestrian walkway at 1,487 metres altitude appears to be supported by two enormous stone hands - a design that became one of the world's most viral travel photographs when the bridge opened in 2018. The surrounding mountain resort of Ba Na Hills has a French village, a theme park, and stunning views of the misty forested hills of central Vietnam's interior. The Ba Na Hills cable car (5,773 metres) is one of the world's longest gondola rides.

Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon) - Vietnam's economic capital - is a city of 9 million people, 10 million motorbikes, and extraordinary kinetic energy. The War Remnants Museum presents a moving and sometimes harrowing account of the Vietnam War from the Vietnamese perspective - a must-visit for any traveller seeking to understand modern Vietnam. The Reunification Palace (where the war ended on 30 April 1975 when North Vietnamese tanks crashed through the gates) is preserved as it was in 1975. The Cu Chi Tunnels - a 250 km network of underground tunnels used by Viet Cong fighters during the war - give visitors a visceral sense of the conflict's asymmetric nature; tourists can crawl through widened sections of the original tunnels. Ben Thanh Market and the Mekong Delta day trip complete the Saigon experience.

What is Ha Long Bay and is it worth visiting?

Ha Long Bay is a UNESCO World Heritage Site - 1,969 limestone islands rising from emerald water across 1,553 sq km. Best experienced on an overnight cruise junk with kayaking, sea cave exploration, and sunrise over the karsts. Absolutely worth visiting - one of Southeast Asia's greatest natural wonders.

What is the best time to visit Vietnam from Ahmedabad?
