Mahabaleshwar is India's undisputed strawberry capital, producing approximately 85% of the country's entire strawberry harvest. The season runs from October to May, and the region around Mapro Garden - the famous food park and strawberry farm - is blanketed with strawberry plantations. Visitors can pick strawberries directly from the vines, sample freshly-made strawberry jam, chocolate, and ice cream, and watch how the fruit is processed. The Mapro Garden experience is one of the most unique agri-tourism attractions in India and a highlight of any Mahabaleshwar visit.
Mahabaleshwar is blessed with some of the most dramatic viewpoints in the Western Ghats. Arthur's Seat (1,470m), known as the "Queen of Points", surveys a vast drop into the dense valley below - on clear days, you can see for over 30 km across the Konkan coast. Wilson Point is the highest point in Mahabaleshwar and the only spot from which both the sunrise over the Deccan plateau and the sunset over the Arabian Sea (on very clear days) can be seen. Venna Lake, in the heart of the market town, is Mahabaleshwar's social centre. The 28-acre artificial lake offers paddle boats, rowboats, and horse rides along its banks. Surrounded by pine and silver oak trees, it is especially atmospheric in the early morning mist. The lakeside market is lined with stalls selling fresh strawberries, mulberries, corn, and local honey - ideal for picking up gifts and snacks.
Pratapgad Fort, 17 km from Mahabaleshwar, is one of the most significant historical landmarks in Maharashtra. Built by Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj in 1656, this mountain fort was the site of the legendary Battle of Pratapgad in 1659, where Shivaji defeated Afzal Khan of the Bijapur Sultanate. A 500-step climb from the base (or a short drive to the upper car park) takes you to the fort's ramparts with sweeping views of the Sahyadri valleys below. The fort houses the Bhavani Devi temple, and the marble statue of Shivaji within the complex is one of Maharashtra's most photographed monuments.
Old Mahabaleshwar, 6 km from the main market, is the spiritual heart of the region. The Mahabaleshwar Temple (dedicated to Lord Shiva) is one of the five sacred Jyotirlinga-associated temples in Maharashtra. The Krishnabai Temple, believed to be 800 years old, marks the origin of the River Krishna - which begins here as a tiny stream from inside the temple's sanctum before flowing 1,400 km across peninsular India to the Bay of Bengal. The Panchganga Temple, nearby, marks the spot where five rivers (Krishna, Venna, Koyna, Savitri, and Gayatri) are said to originate - a profoundly sacred spot for Hindu pilgrims.
